September 2019: Climate Generation Gist

This month, we’re launching a new look and feel for our monthly e-newsletter: the Climate Generation Gist!

Get the gist: simpler, easier content about what we’re doing to advance conversations and education on climate change, as well as how you can engage in solutions. While we’ll post my letter to our blog, you can see the full content of the newsletter by subscribing below.

The unimaginable journey forward has begun for communities recovering from disastrous fires in the Amazon and the devastation left behind by Hurricane Dorian. We find hope as we look to global leaders and youth convening in New York City for the United Nations Climate Action Summit, September 23-29. This also kicks off #ClimateWeek, and we are encouraging people to take action and plug in no matter where you are.

After crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a fossil-fuel free sailboat, youth activist Greta Thunberg arrived in NYC ahead of the Summit, kicking off the Global Climate Strike on Friday, September 20th. We are proud to join with our youth leaders, partners, and adult allies alike for this important event and encourage you to join us at our local Minnesota event! If you’re an educator with students participating, we’ve also created a Educator Climate Strike Toolkit for bringing it into your classroom. You can find an event near you – there are over 1,000 registered strikes happening across the world.

Climate change is now a top-tier campaign issue in U.S. presidential politics and we intend to support on-the-ground conversations that keep it there. Television networks have responded: the first of two network-televised Presidential Town Halls on climate change are this month. CNN hosted a 7-hour event with Democratic candidates who introduced proposals to tackle climate change ahead of the event, and a second event is scheduled for September 19-20 on MSNBC. We encourage you to host a watch party using our Watch Party Toolkit!

To kick off a year-long effort that will energize and connect us for the year ahead, we’re proud to launch Band Together, a fall fundraiser concert with a connected activation campaign — which you’ll hear more about in November. We encourage you to join us at Band Together on November 16 for a night of powerful storytelling, music and climate action; see our full list of performing musicians, get your tickets today, and please spread the word for our biggest event of the year!
